TTT – Giving Thanks!

Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This feature has a different (usually) book related topic each week, and the goal is to compose a list of ten things that correspond to the topic!

This week’s theme is:  What I Am Thankful For

This is one of my favorite times of year. Even though it is also a super hectic time of year for me, I still cherish all of the time that I get to spend with my family and friends. It does bring on a bit of a sense of guilt, though, because it’s (usually) only around this time that I start realizing just how lucky I am and start appreciating all that I have. It’s a bad habit that I need to work on, and with new year’s resolution time just around the corner, perhaps I can make it a priority. For now … here is a list documenting some of the things that I am thankful for!

My Family: I am so unbelievably lucky in the family department. I’m not even just talking immediate family, but extended family as well. I am very close to a lot of my aunts, uncles, and cousins, and throughout the year (especially in the summer when we all go camping) I get to see them a lot. I cannot even begin to express my gratitude at having them all in my life. They are outstanding, unpredictable, absolutely crazy, and ridiculously loving humans, every single one of them. They’ve been there for me more times than I can count, and I couldn’t imagine not having them.

My Friends: What a weird, eclectic group of friends I have, but I wouldn’t trade them for the world. They are such a great support group when times are tough, and never do I laugh as hard as I do when I’m with them. I’m grateful for them accepting me for who I am (even when I’m cranky), and I’m so thankful that despite our lives moving us away from each other, that we’re all able to get together frequently and pick up right where we left off.

My Husband: He is so inspiring. Shortly after we got engaged he up and quit his job to pursue his dreams, and while it was slightly terrifying for me, it was the best thing that ever happened to him. Even though he’s on the path he wants to be on, that hasn’t stopped him. He continues to better himself every single day, to challenge himself to go above and beyond his comfort zone, and it’s magical to watch! He has grown so much, and, okay honestly it kind of makes me feel bad about myself, but I’m so happy for him! If only I could do the same… but he is slowly helping me on the path to doing things that I love and not “wasting my time at a big girl job that I don’t care about”. For example, he told me to start a blog, and I did it (keep reading)…

This Blog: I realize that I’m a mino in the ocean when it comes to the blog world (I’m like Nemo, though, I have big dreams!), but I’m so thankful that I finally got the courage to start this. Truth be told, I’m not sure that anyone in my life even knows that I have a blog (nope, not even my husband, who is the reason I started this), because, well, I’m afraid to tell them. It might be because I don’t want them reading everything I have to say (although, to be honest, I speak my mind all the time anyways so I’m not sure why I’m so nervous), or it might be because I’m scared that this is going to fail and then they’ll be disappointed. I think, though, that it’s a mixture of a lot of things, but now that I’ve taken the first step of setting up a blog, establishing some followers, and writing about things that I love and care about, I’m thinking the next step will be to start letting people know about it 🙂

My Soon-to-Be Niece of Nephew: I freaking love babies. They are so smooshy and small and wonderful, and I’M FINALLY GOING TO HAVE ONE OF MY OWN (sort of) TO PLAY WITH! Yay! So yeah, my oldest sister is pregnant, due in February, and it’s the first baby in our immediate family and I AM SO PUMPED. I’m also having a blast planning her Harry Potter themed baby shower in January. (I’ve been so much on decorations and props and favors… HALP!)

My Ability to Travel: Growing up, we didn’t travel much. If you asked me if there were places that existed other than my hometown or the camp where my family spent the summers, I would have said no. Since then, I’ve obviously opened my eyes a bit, and I’ve been bitten by the travel bug, HARD. Reading books is one of the biggest reasons for that, getting to explore all of these places through the words has made me want to go to these places for myself, and I’m so happy that I have the time, money, and ability to do that. This year alone I’ve been able to go to Brazil, Puerto Rico, and three of the Virgin Islands, plus a ton of states in the US. It’s such a rewarding experience getting to learn about other cultures, meet other people, and escape into real life places that don’t just exist in books, movies, TV, etc.

The Opportunities that I Have: I know that this is broad, but I think it’s a good one. I’m so incredibly lucky in all aspects of my life, and I know that I have remarkable opportunities available to me, and I wish that everyone in the world could say the same. There have been some seriously sad times in the world recently (I don’t want to get into it, turn on the news and you’ll see so many examples of everything that I mean), so I’m going to thank my lucky stars each and every day for everything I have available to me.

• • • • •

Coffee: Gosh I wish I wasn’t as addicted to coffee as I am, but it’s the sad truth. I know most people have a go-to when it comes to coffee, but not me, I don’t discriminate. Espresso? Yup. Chai Tea Latte? Abso-freaking-lutely! Iced? Black? Fancy Caramel Something Or Other? Yes, yes, and yessss. I love coffee in all forms and flavors, and it makes me happy to drink it (and it keeps me warm in the winter, so, bonus). It’s kind of like a comfort food to me, so I’m grateful for all the coffee shops of the world.

Animals: I’ve said more than once that I love animals more than I love humans, and I stick by that. I am so grateful for them, all of them (except maybe spiders and snakes – shivers). On a recent vacation, I had the opportunity to swim with dolphins, and it was the most magical experience I’ve ever had. I cannot wait to get home for the holidays and be surrounded by all of my parent’s puppies (they have three), and my sisters dog, and my other sisters two dogs! When I’m in a sad mood, or I’m angry, nothing cheers me up quite like puppy kisses or looking at cute animal photos. Next goal: PLAY WITH A BABY ELEPHANT. It’s going to happen, I swear.

And lastly … because this is a blog mostly about books …

So Tell Me

What are you thankful for?

The holidays can be stressful, but spending time with the people you love is the best. And the decorations! I always give my cats some treats on Thanksgiving, so they can be thankful, too. (And stop staring at the people food.)
